ECHA Adds Triphenyl Phosphate to REACH Candidate List

This November 7, 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updated the REACH Candidate List by identifying Triphenyl Phosphate (EC 204-112-2; CAS 115-86-6) as a substance of very high concern.

About Triphenyl Phosphate

Triphenyl Phosphate is classified as very toxic to aquatic life and poses long-lasting environmental risks. This substance is widely used across industries and applications, including:

  • Consumer Products like adhesives, sealants, coatings, and cosmetics.
  • Industrial Applications such as construction materials, electronics, machinery, and textiles.
  • Household Items i.e., flooring, furniture, toys, and paper products.

ECHA added the substance to the REACH Candidate List because its presence in long-lasting materials can lead to a low but continuous environmental release over time, potentially affecting ecosystems.

How could this impact my business ?

If your company is active in sectors like manufacturing, construction, or consumer goods and this substance is present in any of your products, you are required to:

  • Disclose info about this substance to downstream users and consumers
  • Consider safer alternatives to reduce risks
  • Update all the relevant safety data sheets (SDS) to reflect the latest REACH Candidate List update

Background

The Candidate List includes substances identified as SVHCs, which may cause severe health effects or harm the environment. Experts select these substances based on criteria such as toxicity, persistence in the environment, and bioaccumulation potential. Chemicals on the list often have properties that pose significant health risks, such as carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, reproductive toxicity, or environmental persistence.

With each Candidate List update, you must evaluate the impact on your products and supply chains.
