Malaysia to Implement Revision 8 of GHS

On June 13th, 2022, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health of Malaysia (DOSH) published a proposal to amend the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2013 according to Revision 8 of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification (GHS).

The proposed amendment introduces, among others, the following:

–        Adoption of new physical hazard categories such as flammable gases, aerosols, pressurized chemicals and desensitized explosives;

–        Implementation of new hazard classes e.g., skin corrosion or irritation severe eye damage or eye irritation…;

–        Introduction of new rules regarding the distribution of SDSs to buyers (as soon as possible and maximum within 6 months);

–        Update of aspiration hazard concentration limit from 10% to 1% or higher because of the potential adverse effects on human health.

This proposal is currently open for consultation. If your company is impacted, we highly recommend sending your comments to DOSH before August 15th, 2022 — end of the consultation period.
